Beggars are happy with what they are doing.

One day I realized that how the number of beggars is increasing at an Alarming rate in Chandigarh. We see beggars begging on the traffic lights and also on the roadsides in sectors/market places. one thing that I have noticed during my one last year is that, beggars have their fixed begging spots and timings. They always come up with some new idea of begging so, my concern of making this blog is to help people in saving their money which , they give to the beggars who are not really needy and beg just because they don't want to work. So Before giving money to a beggar just think about it!

  1. i agree with you amrit..even though they all are so physically fit, they are in such a bad habit of begging that even when we ask that, "come along we will provide you with some job", they just run away. Nowadays they have started new ideas of asking money and food with dialogs like , " Beautiful didi, smart bhaiya, money please money give some money"...its pretty funny and embarrassing as well but Indian culture of "more working hands so more money" dont let these poor children to get what is their right. so in addition with creating awareness about saving money we should take a step in educating these people and helping them finding new opportunities so that they can earn and live a better livelihood..

  2. Though what you say might be true for a large number of beggars, there are people who approach one who are missing limbs or are handicapped. in such situations, should one simply save one's money? of course associations exist which actually amputate people to 'ready' them for begging (we all saw slumdog), but though shelling out five rupees may not be the solution, is turning away the answer?

  4. Begging for sure has become an art of living for many in India. And not only people in need do it any more but it has become a professional line for many. They expect to b respected for it and not only do they beg but also expect you to give them what they demand. Once a beggar not only fought over the fact that Rs. 10 was less but even went up to the extent of offering a change for Rs. 500 since I had told him that that was the only other note I had.

  5. It's so true that begging has turned into a profession these days, and not just a means of living for those who are desperately in the need of help. Like in all the other professions, beggars too have some tricks for their trade. Just go to any big town or city and you get to see the beggars at their creative best and some of them truly deserve an applause for their innovative ideas. An experience that I had was while waiting at the South-Ex red light. A woman desperately needed money to take her companion who was about to have a baby to the hospital and needed money for the auto rickshaw. After hearing dialogues worthy of Bollywood movies (Aap to ek aurat ho. Uska dard samajh sakti ho), I parted with money more than enough for their auto fare. I happened to be waiting at the same red light a couple of days later where I was again approached by the same woman and got a repeat Bollywood performance- inclusive of tears, hysterics, as well as the emotional dialogues. This time, needless to say, I was smarter than to reach for my wallet.

    *understanding nod*

    as for employment....
*on second thought..they would make bloody awesome make up artists!!!*

  10. Deepshikha you are very right in what you have said, i tried to help a child at sector 35 market but he simply said that he does not want to study because begging was just too easy task for him. Now this is what we should take care of, we should not just simply give money when asked by the beggars.

  11. Nimisha and Swesha as you shared your personal incidents that you came across I think you would agree that if we back out from giving them the money, we are actually helping them out.........as this profession will go in loss they would not bring others into this profession and many innocent people who are trapped by this begging mafia will be relieved. so lets help them.....and Always think before we give money next time....Thank you.

  12. Gursheen these beggars actually know the psychology of humans in a better way. They know that they can get some money out of us by creating emotional situations or by showing the pain they are going through but, by the end of the day they are normal human beings who have families and enjoy the same way we all do. The point is not about five rupees or 10 rupees it's about the economic ups and downs faced due to them........Beggars are not doing any productive work but they still earn money which means that they are actually living on what we earn so the flow of money in the market increases leading to many economical problems. so next time before giving the money to the who is not in need just think about the economic stability.

  13. I think the problem is very deep rooted in our society and needs a thorough understanding of India's socio-economic factors. It is a problem that can be eradicated only with effective government rules and equal distribution of wealth in the nation.

  14. Gautamjit you have certainly got the point......but i would like to tell you that government did passed a rule that if any child is seen begging he/she must be provided free education but still the things are same because we people have made this profession so profitable that that there are numerous number of new entries to this profession daily..........so we people are the ones who have the way out and that is just thinking before giving momney to these beggars. Thankyou for sharing your views.

  15. Miandmee Your point is really appreciable but the thing is what we can do on our behalf. policies and rules can only be made by government but it would take a lot of time. so it's better to start it on our behalf and wait for the govenment to take innitiative.

  16. Its easy money, Amrit... Why should they work and earn when they can easily call someone beautiful in English and get 10 bucks... Its interesting if you ask a beggar to give u some money, they are very possessive of the money they got from others. So I think this racket should be abolished and they should earn their living, instead of indulging in begging
